  • Marlies Goovaerts is an experienced dispute resolution lawyer who focuses primarily on corporate criminal law. Her practice covers all aspects of economic and financial criminal law (forgery, fraud, money laundering, misuse of company assets, corruption, computer crimes, insider trading, tax fraud, bankruptcy offenses, social offenses, etc.). She frequently acts in investigations into violations of European legislation (customs and excise crimes, environmental crimes, offenses affecting the financial interests of the EU, etc.).

    Marlies represents companies and business leaders from various sectors. She assists both suspects and injured parties at all stages of criminal investigations and proceedings. Where possible, she guides clients toward an out-of-court solution.

    Her practice is not limited to criminal prosecution in the strict sense. She also assists clients in investigations and procedures conducted by specific authorities, such as the FSMA (Financial Services and Markets Authority), OLAF (European Anti-Fraud Office), and the Belgian Audit Oversight Board (CTR/CSR). Marlies also advises clients on drafting due diligence and compliance programs.

    Furthermore, Marlies assists clients in commercial disputes, particularly in cases where civil and criminal legal issues coexist.

    Finally, Marlies has a particular interest in sports law.

    Education

    Marlies Goovaerts obtained her Master of Laws degree with great distinction from KU Leuven in July 2018. She subsequently obtained an LL.M. in European Economic and Financial Criminal Law at the University of Luxembourg with the highest distinction, specializing in European and economic criminal law. She received the award for Best Master’s Student graduating in 2019 from the Faculty of Law and Business Sciences at the University of Luxembourg.

    In 2023, Marlies obtained the certificate for the Special Training in Cassation Procedure for Criminal Cases.
