Lawyer

  • Jachin Van Doninck advises and litigates (currently mainly as co-counsel) on complex issues of civil procedural law and/or private international law. In collaboration with lead lawyer Arnaud Vannieuwenhuyze and other colleagues, he also assists clients in transport law.

    Prof. Dr. Jachin Van Doninck is senior lecturer at the Faculty of Law and Criminology of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, where he teaches civil procedure, private international law, and ADR.

    He is the author of authoritative publications in the broad field of (international) dispute resolution.

    He sits on the advisory committee of the Flemish Bar Association on civil procedure, is an editorial member of a number of journals, and is a frequent speaker at conferences.

    In 2011, he gave the opening speech of the Flemish Bar Association at the Brussels Bar. 

    Credentials

    Jachin has advised and litigated on a wide range of topics, such as the successive appeals in cassation by the Belgian State in the case of the coordination centres (Cass. June 20, 2024, F.20.0114.N, Belgian State v Fortum), the procedural position of the Privacy Commission (Court of Appeal of Brussels, June 29, 2016, 2016/KR/2, CBPL v Facebook), the professional secrecy of company lawyers (resulting in Cass. January 22, 2015, C.13.0532.F), diplomatic immunity (Cass. October 28, 2016, C.16.0039.N) and press liability (Cass. 12 January 2012, C.10.0610.N: ‘quack’; Cass. 28 November 2014, C.13.0437.N: Mo-magazine v. Forrest). He was involved in various stages of the Fortis case and represented Belgium's leading consumer organization as lead plaintiff in obtaining collective redress (class action) in the Dieselgate case.

    Education

    Jachin Van Doninck studied law at Ghent University (lic.jur. UGent, 2001) and at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (MUST, with DAAD scholarship).

    Jachin obtained his doctorate in law in 2020 with a thesis on the fate of unlawfully obtained evidence (Joint PhD Ghent University-Vrije Universiteit Brussel). He was a lawyer at Stibbe from 2001 to 2015 and is a founding partner of Arcas Law.
